Yearbook-Clasping Students Sign Off On Another Year

Kim Barker Staff Writer

The familiar sounds of late spring are ringing through schools this week: lockers slamming for the last time, pens scribbling across yearbooks, flour bombs exploding in the hallway.

Most schools are calling it quits for the summer this week and next and students are only too glad to celebrate.

At Riverside High School Monday morning, seniors began ripping out pages from their Newsweek magazines, gathered and read for the class Current World Problems. The pile will be a foot thick by the end of the week.

As they threw the pages down, the students left their footprints in a layer of white powder, the fallout from a tossed balloon filled with flour.

At Shadle Park High School, seniors received their yearbooks Friday.

“They get very melancholy,” one teacher said. “They sign the yearbooks, and they get very sad. It’s kind of poignant.”

At Mead High School, seniors cleaned out their lockers Monday morning.

“That was kind of a celebration,” said Marilyn Lund, an educational assistant in the main office. The seniors didn’t make a mess, though.

“Everything looks pretty clean to me,” Lund added.

Students at Nine Mile Falls were mellow as well.

“It’s a Monday,” said one worker. “We’re all tired.”

In the Orchard Prairie School District, students canceled a planned trip to Manito Park because of the bad weather. Instead, they practiced for commencement and watched a G-rated movie.

They get a bonus, come the end of the week.

“They get to ring the bell in the old school building,” said Ed McCarthy, head teacher. “It’s got the original bell, been here for 101 years.”

Dates of graduation and last days are as follows:

Students in District 81 finish school Wednesday. Seniors graduate from Shadle Park Friday, and from Rogers and North Central high schools Saturday. REAL students graduate tonight, and Jantsch students graduate Friday.

Gonzaga Prep students finish today. Seniors graduated May 28.
