Death Toll From Quake Hits 2,000 Russian Workers Still Have Four More Buildings To Search

Associated Press

The death toll in a earthquake on Sakhalin Island topped 2,000 Thursday with the recovery of nearly 400 more bodies - and workers still had four more collapsed buildings to sift through.

Workers digging 12 straight days through heaps of broken bricks and concrete have so far recovered 2,164 bodies in the Far Eastern oil town of Neftegorsk, said Yekaterina Ageyeva, a spokeswoman for the Ministry for Emergency Situations.

The town collapsed when a magnitude 7.5 earthquake toppled five-story apartment houses occupied by most of the 3,000 residents. More than 400 survivors, a number of them critically injured, were being treated on Sakhalin and on the Russian mainland.

No survivors have been found since early Saturday. Officials say the search will continue until all bodies have been found, although it was unclear how many people remained.

More than 22 tons of medical and humanitarian supplies have been shipped to the remote town, according to the Ministry for Emergency Situations.
