Tips For Do-It-Yourself Movers

Leslie Weddell Colorado Springs Gazette Telegraph

Many people who move choose to do it themselves. Because summer is a popular moving time, reserve a truck at least two weeks in advance. Also, try to schedule the move for the middle of the week, when rates are lower.

Other tips:

Start saving newspapers for wrapping dishes, glasses, mirrors. Save plastic bags for covering lamp shades and other goods that newspapers might stain. Save boxes for packing miscellaneous items. A typical two-bedroom home requires at least 25 boxes of various sizes.

Start packing early, pack a little each day and pack one room at a time.

For easier loading and unloading, limit the weight of each box to 30 pounds. Label each box and indicate where you plan to put them in your new home.

Wrap clocks and picture frames in clothing, and pack them in bureau drawers. Carry the drawers individually to the truck to lighten the load. Don’t tape the drawers closed, as tape can ruin the finish. Tie them with a rope instead.

Use wadded, not shredded, newspaper when packing. Shredded paper can get inside appliances and machinery and cause damage.

Use the space in the refrigerator, washing machine and dryer to store linens, pillows and stuffed toys.
