WSU Faculty Members Receive Excellence Awards

Three members of the Washington State University faculty were honored with the Sahlin Faculty Excellence Awards during all-university commencement activities. They are animal scientists Phillip Senger and Ray Wright, and Don Dillman, director of the Social and Economic Sciences Research Center.

Senger was the Sahlin Award winner in instruction and has a unique talent for cultivating students’ ability to reason creatively, critically and logically. He joined the faculty in 1974, and then taught at Pennsylvania State University from 1980-84 before returning to the WSU faculty.

Wright, the award winner in public service for 1994-95, has served the public in many ways. His expertise in male infertility evaluation has assisted physicians throughout Washington and Idaho. He has been a member of the WSU faculty since 1975, and has been a leader in connecting the Washington beef industry to Japanese consumers.

Dillman, the winner in research and creative activity, is internationally recognized as a survey methodologist. He is largely responsible for the development of modern mail and telephone survey methods. He joined the faculty in 1969.

Al Stein, Check Stein and Gus Stein were recognized by The National Grocers Association’s 50 Year Club. The Steins’ IGA Food Stores are based in Rathdrum.

Students from Spokane Lutheran School recently attended the 33rd Annual Lutheran Elementary Schools Tournament on the Concordia College campus in Portland. They competed in 13 separate areas of academic- and sports-related activities with 1,000 other students from Lutheran Day schools in the surrounding Western states and British Columbia. The results of local students are:

Spelling: Jake Wolkenhauer, second in the fifth grade; Chris Reineman, fourth in the eighth grade.

Mathematics: The team of Jake Wolkenhauer, Jeff Clemens, Luke Wolkenhauer and Michael Anderson, first place. Jeff Clemens, third place in fifth grade individual math; Jake Wolkenhauer, third place in sixth grade.

Music: Angela Harras, Promising Musician Award on piano.

Chess: Jeff Clemens, first place, his second year in a row.

Boys Basketball: Team earned third place in the “A” Division.

Michele Vanderlinde has received her Ph.D. from Gonzaga University. She has been employed in dental health for the Spokane County Health District since 1986.
