Idaho Man Dies After Car Goes Into River

A 28-year-old Lapwai, Idaho, man died Friday when the car in which he was riding went into the Lochsa River 10 miles east of Lowell, Idaho.

Richard M. Ellenwood Jr. still was strapped into the 1984 Toyota, recovered nine hours after the 11:42 p.m. crash.

The driver, 29-year-old John S. Wilson, suffered minor injuries.

According to the Idaho State Police, Wilson fell asleep driving westbound on U.S. Highway 12. The Toyota drifted across the oncoming lane, then went in the river. Wilson got out and swam to shore.

Ellenwood’s father is former Nez Perce Indian Tribal Council member Richard M. Ellenwood Sr.
