Eugene ‘Smite’ Waldo Kingston, Idaho

Service for Eugene “Smite” A. Waldo, 77, is set for 11 a.m. today at New Hope Assembly of God Church in Pinehurst. Burial will be at Shoshone Memorial Gardens. Shoshone Funeral Service in Kellogg, is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Waldo, who was born in Harrison, died Friday.

He moved to this area in 1946 after serving in the Army. He had worked in the ore mill for the Bunker Hill Co. and retired after 33 years.

He had been a member of the Bunker Hill 20 Year Club, and the Silver Valley Senior Citizens, Civilian Conservation Corps, the National Guard, and was an Army veteran of World War II. He enjoyed fishing and hunting.

He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Jean Waldo; three sons, John, David and Dan Waldo, all of Kingston; one daughter, Bonnie Knoll, of Pinehurst; one brother, Vernon Waldo, Coeur d’Alene; three sisters, Orient Huseby, Lanore Waldo, and Delores Huseby, all of Coeur d’Alene; ten grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Jami LaFrenz Scholarship Fund in care of the Shoshone Medical Center Foundation.

William White Sandpoint

Private family services for William V. “Bill” White were held at an earlier date. Coffelt Funeral Service of Sandpoint was in charge of arrangements.

Mr. White, who was born in Cohasset, Minn., died May 30 in Sandpoint.

He grew up in Washington and worked for the Spokane Chronicle as a district manager in Spokane for about six years and later worked for The Spokesman-Review in Sandpoint before World War II.

He operated the Lamb Creek Inn in Priest Lake until 1960.

He was an avid bowler who belonged to several bowling leagues in the Inland Northwest.

His wife, Elinor, died in 1984.

Survivors include one daughter, Mavis Bliss of Spokane; two brothers, Harry White of Newport, Wash. and Melvin White of Fontana, Calif.;one sister, Elta Cooley of Spokane; three grandsons, Reisse Perin of Boise, Dan Perin of Vancouver, Wash. and Wayne Perin of St. Maries; one great-grandson; two great-granddaughters; one great-great-grandson; and two great-great-granddaughters.

Ruth Brilling Bellevue, Wash.

Private service for Ruth E. Brilling, 81, will be held. Bleitz Funeral Home in Seattle is in charge of arrangements.

Born in Germany, Mrs. Brilling died Thursday in Bellevue, where she had lived since 1985.

She immigrated to Spokane in 1939. She and her husband, Hugo, operated a veterinary surgical supply company until 1973.

Her husband preceded her in death. She is survived by one son, Steve Brilling of Seattle; two daughters, Karen Stolz of Portland, and Nancy Brilling of Mexico; her twin brother, Gunter Schott of Brazil; one sister, Lieselotte Goldstein of Holland; nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Catherine Johnson Spokane

Memorial service for Catherine B. Johnson, 71, is set for 11 a.m. today at Riplinger Funeral Home.

Mrs. Johnson, who was born in Brenham, Texas, died Friday.

She received a bachelor’s degree from Prairie View A&M College in 1949.

She had lived in Spokane for 58 years and worked for Zukor, Charles and Taylor as a seamstress in Spokane.

In 1970 she joined the Headstart program as a teacher, and retired after 18 years.

Her husband, Kenith, died in 1968.

She is survived by one son, Kenith Johnson of Portland; one sister, Helen Ellis of New York; three granddaughters and one grandson.

Sister Clarisse Marie, S.N.J.M. Spokane

Vigil service for Sister Clarisse Marie (Pauline Blais), will be at 7 p.m. today at Convent of the Holy Names. Funeral Mass is set for 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the convent. Burial will be at Holy Cross Cemetery. Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Sr. Clarisse Marie, 82, died Thursday.

She was born in Eugene, Ore.

She received a master’s degree and Ph.D. from the University of Montreal and lived in Quebec from 1971 to 1977 and served as translator for the Sisters of the Holy Names.

From 1956 until 1971, she taught at Holy Names College and Fort Wright College. She was chair of the French department.

She had lived at Convent of the Holy Names since 1978.

She is survived by a brother, James Blais of Cupertino, Calif.

Bert Duke St. Maries

Service for Bert Kenneth Duke will be at 11 a.m. June 12 at the St. Maries Eagles Lodge. Yates-Hodge Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Duke, who was born in Veneta, Ore., died June 8 near Clarkia, Idaho.

He grew up in Oregon and graduated from Elmira High School in 1955. As a young man he worked for Western Lane Forest Patrol.

He married Rose Netherton in 1955 in Eugene, Ore., and they made their home in Veneta, Ore., where he worked for International Paper.

He moved to St. Maries and went to work for Sindt Logging. He was employed by F.S. Timber Harvesting at the time of his death.

He enjoyed hunting and fishing.

He was a member of the Eagles Aerie 2012 of St. Maries.

Survivors include his wife, at home in St. Maries; five sons, Rick Duke, Greg Duke, Kenny Duke, Brad Duke, and Tim Duke, all of St. Maries; one daughter, Deanna Spray of Fernwood, Idaho; three brothers, Carl Duke of Veneta, Dan Duke of Widefield, Colo., and Thad Duke of Newbrunswick, N.J.; one sister, Jackie DeeDon of Porterville, Calif; 15 grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Debra Mikel Spokane

Service for Debra Jane Mikel, 40, will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Free Methodist Church of Opportunity. Burial will follow at Pines Cemetery. Thornhill Valley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Mikel, who was born in Spokane, died Thursday from cancer.

She was a University High School graduate.

She was an Avon representative for 10 years and a member of the Presidents Club.

She is survived by her husband of 10 years, Steven Mikel; one son, Jason Kunz of Spokane; her parents Willard and Mary Jane Ollila of Spokane; one sister Wilanne Ollila-Perry of Bellingham, Wash.; and grandparents Marvin and Amanda Henshaw of Spokane.
