Recognition Given For Upkeep Of Museum

The City of Ritzville, The National Wheat Museum and the Ritzville “Antiques Annies and Andys” were recognized for their significant contributions to preserving Washington’s heritage. They were awarded the Outstanding Achievement in Stewardship for the continuous care of the Dr. Frank R. Burroughs House. The house is a remarkable memorial to one of the community’s most prominent citizens, a spokesman said. The Burroughs family donated the house, completely intact with its contents, to the city with the condition that it be a museum.

Whitworth College junior Rebecca Jensen is one of 12 students from across North America to be selected to participate in the Fieldstead Student Journalism Workshop in Washington, D.C. The workshop began May 22 and will continue four weeks. She is majoring in communication studies and is a staff writer for The Whitworthian student newspaper.

James Hatfield, Spokane, received a Certificate in Technology from Western Texas College, Snyder. He is a sophomore.

Sixteen Whitworth College students received awards and scholarships in the college’s 10th Annual Writing Across the Curriculum Program. Receiving $500 awards were: Peggy Hardt, Tracey King, Carolyn Stamy, Joy Hobson, Alicia Jordan, Carianne Smith, Nicolle St. Pierre, Kristin Dashen, Tara Fiebick, Wendy Weaver, Derek Smith, Cindy Turner, Kelli Krueger and Chad Clouse. Receiving $250 awards were: Seth Jensen, David Pommer and Brandy Voight.

Shawn Baxter, Nine Mile Falls, is this year’s recipient of the University of Portland’s Rev. Joseph L. Powers, C.S.C. Senior Prize in History for distinctive achievement in the study of history. He is the son of Guy Baxter and Marlene Mahaffey and is a 1991 graduate of Reardan (Wash.) High School.

The Pages of Harmony, Spokane’s chapter of the Barbershop Harmony Society, placed first among six competing choruses in the Division Five competition at Spokane Falls Community College in May. The Lake City Harmonizers of Coeur d’Alene placed second in the competition.

In the quartet competition, Night Magic, a Pages of Harmony quartet, was top winner, followed by the quartet Big Sky Classic Touch, Kalispell, Mont.

Sister Mary Eucharista, of the English Department of Immaculata High School, has been selected as a National Endowment for the Humanities Summer Fellow in a five-week seminar, “Beowulf and the Heroic Age,” at the University of North Carolina, Asheville.
