Dick Zornes Turned Down By Sac State

Dick Zornes will not be Sacramento State’s next football coach.

Zornes, the former Eastern Washington coach, was one of six finalists for the job. But he was told Tuesday by Sac State athletic director Lee McElroy that John Volek, head coach at Fresno City College, had been offered the job.

Zornes, 50, was head coach at EWU for 15 years, compiling an 89-66-2 record before stepping down in November of 1993. His 1992 team shared the Big Sky Conference title with Idaho.

Sac State has applied for membership in the Big Sky and hopes to join the conference by 1996.
