Eastern Chooses Basketball Assistants

Nebraska assistant Jeff Smith and Diablo Valley College assistant David Carter have been named assistants to Eastern Washington men’s basketball coach Steve Aggers, the Big Sky Conference school said Wednesday.

Smith and Carter will assume their new positions July 1 under Aggers, who replaced John Wade as the Eagles’ coach this spring.

Smith, 35, has spent the past seven seasons as an assistant to Nebraska coach Danny Nee. Smith helped the Cornhuskers to four NCAA tournament berths and a Big Eight tournament title in 1994.

Carter, 28, has been an assistant the past three years at Diablo Valley College in Pleasant Hill, Calif., and also spent the 1989-90 season as an assistant to former Washington coach Lynn Nance.

As a player, Carter led St. Mary’s to the West Coast Conference title and a berth in the NCAA tournament in 1989. He is the California school’s all-time assists leader.

Sue Sippl-Lauer , a familiar face to long-distance running at Post Falls High School, has been recommended for a second term as head coach this fall.

Sippl-Lauer’s hiring must be approved by the school board, Post Falls athletic director Sherie Patano said. Sippl-Lauer, who was head coach previously for one year, takes over for Jim Wyatt, who resigned.

“Jim did a very good job, but it was difficult for him because he wasn’t a teacher at the high school,” Patano said. Sippl-Lauer, who coaches the distance runners in track, teaches at the high school.

Track

Jessica Aguirre from Mead High School will run track at the Community Colleges of Spokane, the school announced Wednesday. Aguirre was a member of Mead’s 400-meter relay team that finished second at state last month.
