Lilac Gala Scores Blooming
With just a couple of weeks to go in the fifth annual Lilac Gala Festival bowling tournament at Lilac Lanes, the scoring has heated up.
In the 11th week, there was a 300 game and a 299, an 800 series by a man and a 700 by a woman.
“The bowlers,” said tournament director Dave Loft in an understatement, “had a good time this week.”
Jim Crockett of West Richland had the 300, his first perfect game, to highlight his first 800 series, an 804. He also had a 287 game in the set.
Dick Groce of Spokane put together 11 strikes in a row before leaving the 5 pin with his 12th ball to wind up with a 299.
And Kelly Kurimura of Spokane collected her first 700, a 701, on games of 222, 202 and 277.
The tournament winds up the end of this month.
The PBA will pay an Inland Northwest visit during it’s summer tour for the $115,000 Northwest Classic at Celebrity Bowl in Kennewick July 7-11.

It’s not too late to get involved in the eighth annual Spokane River Canoe Classic on Saturday - as a competitor or spectator.
There are three classes - citizen, team relay and marathon - over courses covering 7 and 12 miles beginning at Corbin Park in Post Falls at 9:30 a.m.
Citizen racers will paddle 7 miles to Harvard Bridge in the Spokane Valley. Relay teams exchange at that point and continue along with the marathoners through Class II rapids at Flora and Sullivan to Plantes Ferry Park.
Cost to race is $10. Spectator viewing is free. There’ll be a picnic at Plantes Ferry afterward about noon.
Mountain biking
The Jimmie Heuga Center, a non-profit scientific research organization for Multiple Sclerosis, brings its fourth annual Mountain Bike Express fund-raiser to Lookout Pass on July 8.
Patterned after its highly successful Ski Express program, the mountain bike event involves threeperson teams (at least one member must be a woman) covering a 10-15-mile course over backcountry roads and trails.
Winners will be determined by a combination of their time and funds raised. Minimum fund-raising requirement is $100 per person and $300 for a team.
