Final Death Toll In Quake Hits 1,989

The final death toll in the Sakhalin Island earthquake is 1,989, Sergei Shoigu, Russia’s minister for emergency situations, said Friday.

The magnitude 7.5 quake, which struck May 28, destroyed the oil town of Neftegorsk.

Deputy Prime Minister Oleg Soskovets said crews were now busy clearing debris and repairing roads and other facilities.
