Kim Jong Ii Makes Rare Appearance

Compiled From Wire Services

Kim Jong Il, North Korea’s new leader, broke a long absence from public view with an appearance Friday.

Kim, 53, has not officially taken power. The infrequency of his appearances has spawned speculation about his health and possible challenges to his hold on power.

In his first official outing in 1 months, Kim was greeted by naval seamen lined up on the decks of battleships, the north’s official news agency reported.

Many analysts think Kim may assume formal power after July 8, the first anniversary of the death of his father, Kim Il Sung.
