Keller Gets His Chance In Goal As U.S. Takes On Mexico

Associated Press

After three years of exile, Kasey Keller finally gets back in goal for the United States today against Mexico.

Keller hasn’t played for the national team since May 17, 1992, a 1-0 loss to Scotland in Denver. After that, he was banished by coach Bora Milutinovic.

Now, with Steve Sampson replacing Milutinovic on an interim basis, Keller has a chance to show he should be the starting goalkeeper when qualifying for the 1998 World Cup begins next year.

Keller, 25, has been starting for three years for Millwall, a London-area club. In 1990, he was the backup to Tony Meola during the World Cup. But in four seasons under Milutinovic, he played just that one game against Scotland.
