Banged-Up Phils Obtain Van Slyke
National League
With their outfield in disarray because of injuries to Lenny Dykstra and Gregg Jefferies, the Philadelphia Phillies acquired veteran center fielder Andy Van Slyke from the Baltimore Orioles for reliever Gene Harris.
“He’s always been a fine defensive player, and he’ll help us with the bat. He brings us some experience, and he’s played on winners,” said Phillies manager Jim Fregosi.
Van Slyke was hitting just .159 in 63 at-bats with the Orioles this year and was hitless in his last 17 at-bats.
Harris was 2-2 for the Phillies this season with an ERA of 4.26.

Darren Daulton, playing a rare Sunday game, snapped a tie in the seventh inning with a two-run homer as Philadelphia beat Florida.
Daulton, who normally has the day off after Saturday night games, was in the lineup because the team needed his bat after injuries sidelined three starters.

Kent Mercker rebounded from his worst start of the season, allowing four hits in eight innings as Atlanta completed a three-game sweep of Colorado.
It was the fifth straight victory for the Braves, who gave up just five runs in the three-game series with Colorado, the best-hitting team in the N.L.

Cincinnati
Cincinnati overcame a blown lead for the second consecutive game, riding a two-run homer and RBI single by Mark Lewis to a victory over Montreal.
The Reds knocked out Carlos Perez in the second inning, then had to come from behind after wasting a 5-1 lead.

Pittsburgh
Andy Ashby outpitched 10-game loser Paul Wagner, tossing a four-hitter for his first career shutout as San Diego finished a three-game sweep of Pittsburgh.
Ashby (3-4) allowed only one runner as far as third base for his first shutout in 72 career starts.

New York
Todd Hundley had a three-run homer and four RBIs, Bret Saberhagen allowed only five hits in eight innings and New York prevented a three-game sweep by beating Houston.
Ryan Thompson added a solo homer and Bobby Bonilla had three singles as the Mets had 13 hits off four Houston pitchers.
Giants 6, Cardinals 1
St. Louis
Mark Portugal pitched a five-hitter and Royce Clayton had three doubles, leading San Francisco past St. Louis for its first series victory in Busch Stadium since 1990.
Portugal (5-1), now 6-0 lifetime against the Cardinals, pitched his first complete game since April 17 and the third of his career.

Ismael Valdes pitched his first career shutout, a five-hitter that lowered his ERA to 2.23 as Los Angeles handed the Cubs their first shutout in 103 games.
