Call This One A Case Of Media Malpractice

Compiled By Staff Writer Rick Bo

Tom Smothers, on his performing partnership with brother Dick (on Conan O’Brien’s “Late Night” show): “The reason we got along so long is we treat this relationship like an old marriage - a lot of fighting and no sex.”

Reports of Sharon Stone’s cancerous condition have been greatly exaggerated.

The sultry actress dropped out of Saturday’s “National Race For The Cure” to benefit breast cancer research following erroneous news reports that she had cancer herself.

“I can’t (participate) now,” said Stone. “It’s a media frenzy, and we don’t have that kind of security.”

In a sold-out speech at the National Press Club on Friday, Stone told how she had been misdiagnosed with cancer of the lymph nodes four years ago. That night, the local news reported she had cancer and was in remission.

During her talk, Stone said: “We’re not supposed to talk about breasts, but there’s a lot of people in this room who’d pay $7.50 to see mine, so I guess they’re pretty interesting.”

He proves that age is really nothing to fret about

Chet Atkins turns 71 today.

It’s not hard to guess which she’d rather have

Connie Chung may have lost her co-anchor job at CBS News, but she’s gained a baby boy. Chung and talk-show host husband Maury Povich, who unsuccessfully tried to have children for years, announced they have adopted a son, Matthew Jay Povich.

They’re looking for a few good rating points

The Marines refused to get involved in the bidding war between Jay Leno and David Letterman over Air Force Capt. Scott O’Grady. After O’Grady agreed to appear on Leno’s “Tonight Show,” reports Time magazine, Letterman’s “Late Night” wouldn’t take him unless his Marine rescuers also appeared - which got shot down by the corps.

But if Bill takes a tumble, we’ll have an idea

House Speaker Newt Gingrich turned 52 on Saturday, but he kept his birthday wishes to himself. “It’s like when you blow out the candles, you can’t tell,” Gingrich told reporters before a birthday bash for 500 people Friday night. “I’m not going to say what I’m wishing for.”

Whichever it is, Newt’s are apparently too tight

Gingrich will follow in Bill Clinton’s footsteps and appear in a questionand-answer show on MTV, “Newt: Raw,” on July 13. Among the questions Clinton fielded in 1992: “Do you wear boxers or briefs?”

In life, as we learn, it’s always something

Gene Wilder has opened a club for cancer patients in New York to honor his late wife, Gilda Radner, who died of ovarian cancer in 1989. Wilder said she told him in a dream: “I think Gilda’s Club is a wonderful thing, and I’m glad you called it that ‘cause it made me laugh. I wish I could have gone there when I was alive, but - never mind.”
