Shadle Library Design Approved By Board

Bruce Krasnow Staff Writer

The new north Spokane library branch will feature gentle curves and a sloping roof with a facade that faces in toward Shadle Park, the library board decided Tuesday.

The 18,000-square-foot building at Wellesley and Belt also will have a basalt base and a meeting room off the main entrance for use by community groups.

The front of the building will keep its focus on the park and it will curve away from Wellesley, said Tom Golden, architect with Northwest Architectural Co.

To accommodate the building there will be some changes to the parking lot and the library board will pay for park improvements such as a new playground, landscaping and walking paths.

The $1.8 million project is expected to go out for bid in early 1996 and would take one year to construct, said Dan Walters, director of the Spokane libraries.
