Musical Group To Teach, Perform At Christ Lutheran

Thinking of missing church because of Hoopfest? The Rev. Tom Shelly, pastor of Christ Lutheran Church, hopes you’ll reconsider.

A traveling musical troupe will be at his church this weekend, offering performances of its own.

Dry Bones, a youth musical ministry team, will appear at the church today and Sunday.

The group plays contemporary Christian music, but that’s not all. Shelly says the members of the group will give a children’s sermon, share their own stories and incorporate puppets and drama as well.

“They’re quite versatile,” he says.

That versatility takes them just about everywhere - in addition to churches, the group performs at prisons, schools and nursing homes.

Their tour is sponsored by Lutheran Youth Encounter, a Minneapolis-based evangelistic group.

Dry Bones’ case is different. The five members were already an established band before they began working with this organization. The puppets came later.

“The group is unique,” said Greg Birge, Lutheran Youth Encounter’s national band program director. “They do primarily contemporary, original music, with almost a jazz feel.”

Dry Bones will teach and perform at the 5:30 p.m. service today and at Sunday’s 9:30 a.m. service. Christ Lutheran is at 13009 E. Broadway.

Pancake breakfast

St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, 4521 N. Arden Road, will be host to a pancake breakfast Sunday after both morning Masses.

The events will be held in the church hall at 9 and 11:30 a.m.

The flapjacks will be in good company. Sausage, juice and coffee are included in the price. The breakfasts cost $4 for adults and $2.50 for children younger than 10.

Vacation Bible school

East Valley Presbyterian Church, 5305 N. Harvard Road, starts its “Sontown Family Celebration” vacation Bible school on Sunday.

Classes continue through June 29. Sessions will be held each day from 6:30-8:30 p.m.

Registration is free. For more information or to register, call Jan Mettler at 927-8242.
