Kings Hitting In Sound
Fishing
King salmon fishing is picking up steam in the Puget Sound area.
“Last weekend we caught nine kings ranging from 7 to 15 pounds and a few larger ones are showing,” said Dave Morgison of Possession Point Charters.
Morgison, who runs 7 to 15 miles to fishing waters from the Port of Everett, said this year’s limited season for king salmon runs through the Fourth of July.
“People are confused by all the closures, but we had a good winter blackmouth season and there’s good fishing for kings here for the next few weeks,” he said.
Beginning Aug. 1, salmon anglers will be allowed a four-fish daily limit for coho and pink salmon. The pink salmon, known as “humpies,” return in massive numbers to Puget Sound only on odd-numbered years.
“You’ll be able to keep four humpies a day or two silver and two humpies,” Morgison said.
Salmon fishing is open year around in the Tacoma area and around the San Juan Islands. But July closures will thwart salmon fishing in other traditional spots such as the Strait of Juan de Fuca.
