Local Marathoners Excited By Pursuit

From Staff Reports

Stan Holman and Chris Morlan of Spokane are watching others attain what they’re chasing and are getting excited by the pursuit.

Holman and Morlan, who are trying to qualify for the U.S. Olympic Trials in the marathon, turned in personal records last weekend in the Grandma’s Marathon in Duluth, Minn.

Holman was 29th in the field of some 6,000 runners with a time of 2 hours, 23 minutes, 56 seconds. Morlan was 38th in 2:25:47. Holman covered the 26-mile, 385-yard course 40 seconds faster than he had before; Morlan 3 minutes faster.

“It was a particularly fast course,” said Morlan, noting 22 men met the Olympic Trials qualifying standard of 2:22.

“It’s quite exciting to see other people doing what we’re reaching for,” he added. “We have half a year left. There are two or three more races left this year, and we’ll pick one or two and see if we can get there (to the qualifying standard).”
