A Frightening Aftershock

Associated Press

A year and a half after the deadly Northridge quake toppled buildings, one of its aftershocks Monday jostled Southern Californians out of bed and knock objects off shelves.

“It wasn’t my alarm clock that woke me up this morning, it was nature’s wake-up call, again,” said waitress Judy Bandhaya. “It was pretty frightening.”

No major damage was reported following the 1:40 a.m. quake. Seismologists said the magnitude 4.9 quake it was just another of the more than 11,000 aftershocks since the 6.7 Northridge quake, which killed 61 people January 17, 1994.
