That’s A Lot Of Legos
When Queen Elizabeth II looks from the windows of Windsor Castle next year, she may spot the latest export from the Danish toymaker Lego: an amusement park.
By April 1996, Lego hopes to open its first Legoland outside Denmark near the famous English castle.
Three years later, in 1999, Lego aims to challenge Disney on its home turf by opening a second park in Carlsbad, Calif.
The first Legoland, located next to the company headquarters here, opened in 1968. Last year it drew 1.16 million visitors, and Lego thinks 1.2 million to 1.4 million will visit the park at Windsor.
Lego says its parks will be adapted to their host countries but would still feature the original Legoland’s most popular attractions: Miniland, a Gulliver’s walk among Lilliputian copies of famous buildings, and sites made of 43.5 million Lego bricks.
