Spain Upsets Russia

Ferran Martinez scored 27 points to lead Spain to a 94-78 upset over Russia in the European Basketball Championships.

In other games, Yugoslavia beat Israel 72-59; Lithuania defeated Sweden 96-73; Croatia beat winless Finland 92-77; Slovenia scored its first victory of the tournament by beating Turkey 93-74 and Greece topped Germany 83-79.

Croatia, Spain, Russia and France advanced from Pool B. In Pool A, Yugoslavia, Lithuania and Greece are through, with Italy almost safely home.

Four teams from each of the seven-nation groups advance to the quarterfinals. Semifinalists will gain automatic berths at next summer’s Olympics in Atlanta.
