Uncertainty Drags Dollar Down
The dollar ended mostly lower Tuesday in a quiet finish to a volatile trading day marked by conflicting signals over interest rates and uncertainty over the outcome of the U.S.-Japanese trade talks.
The United States is demanding that Japan open its domestic automotive market and has threatened an 11:59 p.m. EDT deadline today for resolving the dispute. Without a breakthrough the United States will impose 100 percent tariffs on 13 luxury Japanese autos.
In late New York trading, the dollar fetched 1.3863 German marks, down from 1.3905 late Monday. It also was trading at 84.18 Japanese yen, down from 84.40 late Monday.
