Foreman Drops Ibf
George Foreman has decided to relinquish his International Boxing Federation heavyweight championship and not give Germany’s Axel Schulz a rematch, the Los Angeles Times reported.
The move would leave Foreman, who won the IBF and WBA heavyweight titles last November when he knocked out Michael Moorer, without a major title.
Foreman, 46, was stripped of the WBA title because he wouldn’t sign for a mandatory defense against No. 1 contender Tony Tucker. Instead, he fought Schulz in Las Vegas on April 22 and won a controversial majority decision.
The IBF ordered Foreman to give Schulz a rematch and said it would strip him of the title if he refused.
Foreman said he plans to fight only one more time and prefers a rematch with Michael Moorer, whom he knocked out for the IBF crown.
“A Moorer rematch is the No. 1 priority,” Arum said. “If not, then Riddick Bowe or Evander Holyfield.”
Oscar De La Hoya was told he will be stripped of his IBF lightweight title if he doesn’t defend it against No. 1 contender Miguel Julio by July 31, federation president Bob Lee said.
