Fired Trucking Company Employee Charged With Killing His Employer

Associated Press

A fired trucking company employee has been arrested in the fatal shooting of his employer at a gas station.

Gerald G. Singleton, 44, of Cashmere, was arrested shortly after the shooting of Jim Clancy Wednesday night at the Rocky Reach Chevron north of Wenatchee on U.S. 97A.

Clancy, 51, was shot in the chest as he sat in the cab of his tractor trailer. He walked into the station and collapsed. He was transported to Central Washington Hospital, where he died during surgery, the Chelan County Sheriff’s Office said.

Singleton was arrested on foot about 150 yards from the station. A State Patrol officer seized a .38-caliber handgun from Singleton, and he was booked into the Chelan County Regional Jail for investigation of second-degree murder.

Singleton had worked for Clancy for about two weeks, sheriff’s detective Joe Herron said.

Clancy’s wife, Janice, said her husband had fired Singleton earlier in the day, after Singleton refused to transport a load of apples in a truck that needed minor repairs.

She said her husband told Singleton to get his belongings and paycheck, then arranged to meet with him at the gas station to give him some belongings left in a truck.

Clancy was preparing to drive a load of cherries to Seattle when he was shot.
