Eagles Keep Trophy In Sight A Girls

Bob Coleman Staff writer

A twisting, overthe-shoulder, no-look shot by sophomore Carrie Waddell sent Lakeside on its way to victory and into the trophy round of the Class A high school girls basketball state tournament for the first time.

The Eagles survived a 54-50 scrap with Cascade to earn a spot in the game for fourth and seventh places today at 12:30 p.m. In only its second visit to state, Lakeside (23-4) takes on Foster (24-1) for the title.

Waddell’s shot game as the Eagles clung to a 45-44 lead with 2 minutes and 7 seconds remaining in the game. She collided with a Kodiak defender and threw up the shot as she fell to the ground.

“I didn’t even know if I made it,” said Waddell, who was fouled on the play. “I had to ask my teammates if it went in.”

Waddell sank the free throw and the Eagles’ lead was up to 48-44.

“I just said to myself, put this free throw in,” Waddell said. “Free throws are everything.”

That proved to be true as Lora Jolley pushed the lead to 50-44 with a pair of free throws moments later. Waddell added four more from the line to seal the win.

Lakeside led 25-16 at the half, but was outscored 21-13 in the third quarter.

“Usually, we’re the third-quarter team,” Lakeside coach Lisa Schultz said, “but they came out fired up.”

Cascade trailed by just one by the end of the third quarter.

That’s when Jolley turned in her most notable performance. As the Eagles ran off a 10-5 run, the junior forward held Kodiak standout Megan Franza to just one basket on four shots. Franza score two 3-point shots at the end to make it close and finished with a game-high 25 points.

Jolley finished with 10 points, as did Erin Traber.
