Chang Ousted In Upset

Thomas Muster of Austria upset fourth-seeded Michael Chang in a final-set tiebreaker to advance to the quarterfinals of the Newsweek Champions Cup tennis tournament.

Muster, seeded 14th, defeated Chang 6-1, 5-7, 7-6 (7-3). Muster meets Stefan Edberg, the 11th-seeded player, who won his quarterfinal spot by defeating No. 5 seed Alberto Bersategui of Spain, 6-1, 6-2.

In other matches, top-seeded Pete Sampras got by No. 15 Patrick Rafter of Australia 6-4, 6-7 (8-10), 6-1; No. 3 Boris Becker won a shortened match when Marcelo Rios of Chile was forced to retire with a hip injury while trailing 6-3, 3-2; and No. 8 Todd Martin edged David Wheaton 7-6 (7-5), 4-6, 7-5.
