Bennett Blocks Save Sun Devils

Associated Press

Pac-10

Mario Bennett scored 34 points and had game-saving blocks in regulation and double overtime Saturday as No. 18 Arizona State stopped No. 12 Arizona 103-98 in Tucson.

Bennett blocked a game-tying 3-point attempt by Corey Williams with 5 seconds remaining after the Sun Devils (12-6 Pac-10, 22-8) took the lead for good at 99-98 on Joe Zaletel’s layup.

Isaac Burton added two free throws, and Marcell Capers finished the scoring with two more.

Arizona, playing without suddenly ineligible Damon Stoudamire, finished the regular season 13-5 in the Pac-10 and 23-7 overall.

Bennett, the Pac-10’s all-time leading shot blocker, had 10 rebounds and five blocks. He forced overtime by blocking Ray Owes’ jumper at the buzzer in regulation after the Sun Devils’ Ron Riley had tied it at 81 with 8.7 seconds to go on a 3-pointer.

Bennett scored 27 points in regulation, 12 of them in the final 5:56, and added five in the first overtime.
