Lemanowicz, Chiefs Turn Back Cougars

The Spokane Chiefs received all the scoring they would need in the first period to down the Prince George Cougars 3-1 in a Western Hockey League game Saturday night in the Prince George Coliseum.

Chiefs goaltender David Lemanowicz turned back 39 of the 40 shots he faced, making first-period goals by Dmitri Leonov and Greg Leeb stand up.

The win was the second over the Cougars for the Chiefs in as many nights and the third in a row on the road.

Matt Van Horlick redirected a shot by former Chief Trevor Shoaf at 5:59 of the first period to get Prince George on the board first.

But that was all the scoring the Cougars could do as Lemanowicz slammed the door.

Leonov scored the equalizer for Spokane at 16:12, beating Mike Walker off a Hugh Hamilton pass.

Less than 2 minutes later, the Chiefs struck again, this time with Leeb.

The rookie gathered the rebound of a Trent Whitfield shot to put Spokane ahead 2-1.

Spokane added an insurance goal when Adam Shockey’s pass off the right-wing boards found Joe Cardarelli for a power-play goal at 14:29 of the second period. The 5-foot-11 center beat Walker on a 1-on-1 situation for his 16th powerplay goal of the season.

Spokane is 3-2-1 against the Cougars this season, including 2-1-1 at Prince George.

The Chiefs return home to meet the Tri-City Americans on Wednesday night in the Coliseum.
