Swingley Increases Lead
Doug Swingley surged farther ahead in the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race on Monday, becoming the first musher in and out of this Norton Sound village after making a hazardous crossing of some rough Bering Sea ice.
Swingley, from Simms, Mont., reached Koyuk at 2:10 a.m. Alaska time. Koyuk is 171 miles and an 8-hour mandatory rest stop from the finish line at Nome.
