Fresno State Coach Quits

Compiled From Wire Services

Gary Colson, ninth among active NCAA Division I coaches with 563 career wins, announced his resignation as men’s basketball coach at Fresno State.

Colson, 76-73 in five years at the school, has accepted an administrative position within Fresno State’s athletic department.

“I wanted to get out of coaching on my own terms,” the 61-year-old coach said. “How many do you know in this business that are able to do that?”

An NCAA investigation of the men’s basketball program at New Mexico State is focusing on possible violations concerning the transfer of academic credit from a junior college for players in the fall of 1993, according to the school.

Montana center Matt Kempfert, who injured his right knee in the Big Sky Conference championship game, may not play in the team’s National Invitation Tournament opener against Texas-El Paso, coach Blaine Taylor said.

Former Montana State coach Stu Starner, the men’s basketball coach at Texas-San Antonio for the last five years, has resigned, ending a coaching career that spanned 30 years. Starner, 51, will remain at the school to work in university relations.
