NHL players moved closer to competing in the 1998 Winter Olympics after a meeting in Switzerland featuring three top hockey executives.

“There are a series of issues that need to be worked out before a definite commitment can be made,” NHL commissioner Gary Bettman said. “We are on a timetable of mid-July for a final decision.”

Bettman was joined at the daylong meeting by Juan Antonio Samaranch, president of the International Olympic Committee; Rene Fasel, president of the International Ice Hockey Federation; and Bob Goodenow, executive director of the NHL Players Association.
