Stanford Outlasts Charlotte 70-68, Saves Pac10 Face

Associated Press

Stanford helped soothe the bruised pride of the Pac-10 Conference, and in the process, ended a 53-year-old NCAA dry spell.

The Cardinal’s 70-68 win Friday over North Carolina Charlotte not only put Stanford into the second round of the NCAA tournament’s East Regional Sunday against Massachusetts, but it was also Stanford’s first win in the NCAAs since winning it all in 1942.

Stanford players seemed more excited about having won one for the Pac-10, which had lost both Oregon and Arizona in first-round upsets.

“We knew that we had to go out and show that the Pac-10 is tough,” said Stanford guard Brevin Knight, who scored 13 points and set up the winning basket. “Arizona and Oregon played good teams and they happened to lose. But we’re going to try to keep the Pac-10 alive as long as possible.”

While UNCC had success all game by pounding the basketball down low to Jarvis Lang, who finished with 21 points and 15 rebounds, it suddenly started hoisting jump shots as Stanford caught up and went ahead down the stretch.
