Lake City Fires Away In 6-0 Victory Cda Can’t Handle Onslaught As Timberwolves Stay Unbeaten

Rita Balock Correspondent

Lake City started firing away at the Coeur d’Alene goal just 2 minutes into Tuesday afternoon’s high school boys’ soccer game.

The Timberwolves never let up, coasting to a 6-0 victory over the Vikings at Canfield Middle School.

“I think we expected to shut them out, but we didn’t expect to score that much,” Lake City senior midfielder Robin Bundy said. “We just dominated the middle. We were switching the ball better in the second half.”

Six players scored for Lake City, including Bundy, who assisted on two other goals as the Timberwolves improved to 2-0-1 overall.

Coeur d’ Alene dropped to 1-2.

The Timberwolves led 2-0 in the first 14 minutes.

Senior Ryan Murdoch put Lake City on the scoreboard 3 minutes into the game, and Bundy assisted junior Mike Thorpe’s short direct shot over the left side at the 14-minute mark.

Bundy nearly scored twice in the last 16 minutes of the first half, including an attempt at 38 minutes which sailed wide left of the goal by about a foot.

Lake City took charge in the second half, outshooting the Vikings 18-8.

“It’s hard for kids at this age to control their emotions,” Timberwolves coach Bill Eisenwinter said. “I thought we relaxed and it helped our play. (The Vikings) play a more direct style. The second half, we used both sides better. Our depth also helped.”

Lake City senior goalkeeper Dustin Pilcher recorded 10 saves off 12 Coeur d’Alene shots.

The Vikings got 10 saves from senior Mike Drake. Lake City blasted 29 shots at the Coeur d’Alene goal.

“We were tired. We were down after those first two goals in the first half,” Vikings senior Brett Fink said. “We were getting frustrated. We have a young team that doesn’t have much experience … Most of our inexperienced players are in the midfield.”

Bundy managed to score unassisted from 20 yards over the right side at 53 minutes to make it 3-0.

At the 63-minute mark, Bundy assisted Will Scott as Bundy fell.

Moments later, a brief scuffle ensued in front of the Lake City bench, resulting in the ejection of the Timberwolves’ Kris Hedge and Coeur d’Alene’s Ben Davis. At that point, the Vikings had gone 10 minutes without a shot.

In the closing 6 minutes, Lake City added goals from sophomore Dan Clark, unassisted from 30 yards, and sophomore Matt Anderson, off a rebound of a Scott miss.

Coeur d’Alene travels to play Riverside on Saturday. Lake City is idle until Tuesday, when Moscow visits.
