Spokane Shooters Show Talent

Three Spokane shooters were double medalists in a National Rifle Association-sanctioned pistol shoot two weeks ago at the Coeur d’Alene Rifle and Pistol Club.

Pat Kelly won the gold in the international standard pistol and silver in conventional pistol. Bill Leech won a gold in air pistol and a bronze in conventional pistol. Jon Powell won the silver in air pistol and bronze in international standard.

Other medalists: Dennis Schmauch, Spokane, gold in conventional pistol; Steve Phillabaum, Deer Park, silver, international standard; and Scott Hogan, Spokane, bronze, air pistol.

Medalist scores from North Idaho and Eastern Washington’s first NRA event will be entered in the 1995 national championships, to be completed later this spring.

Rock climbing

Rock climbers can test their skills for free Saturday during the grand opening of REI’s new 29-foot climbing wall. The eye-appealing design includes overhangs and jam cracks. REI will provide ropes and belayers.

Skiing

Sun Valley Resort will be the site of the Absolut Ski Challenge benefit Saturday.

Skiers of all levels will help raise money for The Peregrine Fund/World Center for Birds of Prey, a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving birds. Absolut Vodka will match each dollar raised at the event. Competitors must be 21 or older.

Nutrition

Bob Ward, a football standout at Whitworth College before graduating in 1955, who became one of the leading strength and conditioning coaches in the NFL, will be back in Spokane on Saturday to endorse a food supplement designed for athletes.

Ward, an assistant coach with the Dallas Cowboys from 1976-89, will talk at 10 a.m. in the Shoreline Room at Cavanaugh’s River Inn on Emprise, for whom he’s sports research director. His talk is open to the public without charge.

Bowling

Robert Johnson and George Renner of Craigmont, Idaho, finished third in the $250,000 Miller Genuine Draft Doubles Challenge in Reno, Nev., to earn $7,000.

Qualifying leaders Lydia Bonzon and Manny Manapul of North York, Ontario, won the $20,000 first prize with an 8-3 record and 8,127 pinfall. , In-line skating

Canoeing

Alan Kesselheim and Marypat Zitzer, a husband-wife canoe team, will be in Spokane to present a slide show about their 2,000-mile Canadian arctic adventures. The show and readings will begin Monday, 7 p.m., at Aunties Bookstore, 402 W. Main.
