Lewis Fund Reaps Big Bucks
A two-day fund-raising effort for the Reggie Lewis Foundation will bring in more than $200,000, according to preliminary results announced Friday by the Boston Celtics.
The effort included a telethon Tuesday night and continued through Wednesday. Lewis’ uniform number 35 was retired Wednesday night at halftime of the game between the Boston Celtics and Chicago Bulls.
Lewis died at the age of 27 shortly after collapsing on July 27, 1993, while shooting baskets. Recent newspaper reports have quoted allegations that he used cocaine. Family and friends have denied it.
“Reggie Lewis modestly and generously gave so much to so many. It’s inspiring to see the community come together to do the same in his honor,” said John A. Curry, president of Northeastern, Lewis’ school.
“Our commitment and respect for Reggie and our desire to see his good works continued by the foundation were shared and matched by so many who generously responded,” said Dave Gavitt, vice chairman of the board for the Celtics.
The Phoenix Suns activated forward Wayman Tisdale from the injured list, giving them more inside strength.
Tisdale, a 10th-year pro, had scored in double figures in 11 of his last 12 games before he strained his left rib cage March 12 against the Golden State Warriors.
The Indiana Pacers, moving to fill the roster spot vacated by the injured LaSalle Thompson, have signed veteran center Greg Kite to a 10-day contract.
Kite, a 6-foot-11, 263-pound veteran of six NBA teams, could give the Pacers depth on the front line.
