Tyson Free Early Today; Plans Unclear

New York Times

After three years in prison, Mike Tyson was scheduled to be released from the Indiana Youth Center sometime after 6 a.m. today.

Tyson, the 28-year-old former heavyweight champion, was expected to be taken by limousine to his home in Southington, Ohio, where he owns a 60-acre estate. The prison, located in Plainfield, Ind., some 20 miles from here, has been Tyson’s home since he was convicted in February 1992 of raping Desiree Washington, a contestant in the Miss Black America beauty contest, in 1991.

It was not clear whether Tyson would join Muhammad Sideeq, who calls himself Tyson’s “spiritual adviser,” when Sideeq and other Muslims hold a prayer session on the lawn of a dance studio across the street from the prison.

Sideeq has said that several noted Muslim converts and boxing champions, including Muhammad Ali, were expected to take part in the prayer session.

Tyson has not disclosed whether he has been converted to Islam or if he will continue with Don King as his manager, nor who his opponent would be in a come-back fight, which some estimate could gross him in the neighborhood of $35 million.
