Unitarians Will Dedicate Their New Building Sunday
The Unitarian Universalist Church of Spokane, 4340 W. Fort Wright Drive, will hold a dedication ceremony for its new building during the church’s 10:30 a.m. service on Sunday.
The congregation has been meeting at its new location since the midNovember, but Sunday marks the official opening of the $1.4 million building.
Dr. John Buehrens, president of the Unitarian Universalist Association, will be visiting from Boston to deliver the sermon.
The church, which traces its Spokane roots to 1887, had held services and church functions at the Glover Mansion, which it bought in 1943 for $20,000, and at the chapel it had built next door in 1960.
As the congregation grew, it ran out of space and was forced to build a new home.
The Unitarian Universalist Church built its new church with money raised by congregation donations and loans.
The new building has four times the space of the old one and can hold up to B 350 people. It also contains facilities designed to house other church activities, from classes to spirituality groups.
The Unitarian Universalist Church is a family-oriented, liberal church that draws on a variety of religious doctrine, both Eastern and Western, to make up its teachings.
There will only be one service at the church this Sunday. Normal Sunday services are at 9 and 11 a.m.
