Swing Into Summer Fun
The classic style of the two-bench lawn swing has made it a favorite for cool, summertime relaxation. This do-it-yourself version will quickly transform an ordinary shady spot in the yard into a great place to cool down, swing and chat.
With seating for four or more on comfortable benches and a sturdy frame, this swing will stand up to years of regular use.<
Although it’s large, the swing is fairly inexpensive and easy to build. Average do-it-yourselfers will need only a weekend or two to finish it. Standard fir (2-by-4’s, 1-by-2’s, 1-by-3’s and 1-by-4’s) was used for the prototype pictured here. Other materials include four pieces of water pipe and nuts, bolts, screws and nails.
Straight cuts of fir make up most of the swing’s pieces, and all curved cuts are traced from full-size patterns. Assembly mostly requires screwing and bolting the pieces together. Paint, stain or whitewash finishes the job. The completed swing measures about 8 feet high by 7 feet long by 6 feet wide.
The Lawn Swing plan, No. 276, is $6.50 and includes step-by-step instructions with photos, full-size traceable patterns, exploded assembly diagrams, cutting diagrams and a shopping list.
Also available for $6.50 is the canopy lawn swing, No. 818, which is similar in size and style but has a canopy top. Prices include sales tax, postage and handling.
