Diabetes Group Opens Spokane Site
The Washington affiliate of the American Diabetes Association recently opened a new office in Spokane.
Located inside the Deaconess Health and Education Center, 910 W. Fifth, Suite 237, the office will serve Spokane and five other counties in Eastern Washington as well as nine counties in North Idaho.
Diabetes threatens nearly 45 percent of Americans between ages 30 and 65. Fourteen million people, half of whom go untreated, suffer from the blood sugar disorder.
The Spokane office plans to increase public awareness about diabetes, organize communitywide educational programs and form, sustain and expand support groups for diabetics, their families and their friends. It also will offer public access to diabetes literature, from books to case studies, videos and other topical resources. For more information, call 624-7478.
Anxiety disorder screenings
St. Luke’s Rehabilitation Institute, 711 S. Cowley, will provide free anxiety disorder screenings Wednesday in room 200 of the institute.
An estimated 25 percent of Americans, at one time or an another, suffer from anxiety disorder. However, only 25 percent of those with the ailment seek professional treatment.
Symptoms of anxiety disorder include nervousness, anxiety attacks, racing heartbeat, sleeplessness, obsessions or compulsions, restlessness, fatigue, excessive worry, concentration difficulties and muscle tension.
Wednesday’s free screenings are at 9 a.m., noon, and 4 and 6 p.m. Reservations aren’t required.

Child CPR
Valley Hospital and Medical Center, 12606 E. Mission, is offering an infant and child safety techniques class on Wednesday at 7 p.m. in the O.B. Room at the hospital.
The class will cover safety techniques such as cardio-pulmonary resuscitation and the Heimlich maneuver.
The cost is $5 per person or $10 for families.

Class for soon-to-be siblings
Valley Hospital and Medical Center will hold a class for children, ages 3 and older, who are about to become big brothers and sisters. It will be held Thursday at 6:30 p.m. in the O.B. Room at the hospital.
Children will be taught basic infant-care duties such as diaper changing, baby holding and baby feeding. Participants also will be given a tour of the hospital’s obstetrical ward.
The cost is $10 per family.
