Don’t Look For A Royal Divorce In The Big Apple

Compiled By Staff Writer Dan Web

Loose talk

Sylvester Stallone on his forthcoming film, “Assassins,” now shooting in Seattle: “It’s deep, you know? It’s a very cerebral movie.”

So much for the important stuff. It’s now time for a Princess Diana update.

Jane Proctor, editor of the British magazine Tatler, is a true royal-watcher. Tuned in to their every move, Proctor feels safe in saying that Di will never move to New York.

Because? “She’s not rich enough,” says Procter. “To be rich in New York is to be very rich. In London, you don’t have to be very rich. We ‘live’ in London; we don’t have ‘lifestyles.”’

And, she says, Di and her estranged husband will never divorce. “If (Prince) Charles divorces her, it would be perceived he should marry Camilla (Parker Bowles), and he doesn’t really want to. If she divorces him, her power and access over her sons will diminish.”

Benjamin? We thought his first name was ‘Dr.’

Benjamin Spock turns 92 today.

So, how many Newts does it take to screw in a lightbulb?

Who says feminists don’t have senses of humor? National Organization for Women President Patricia Ireland has a pet definition for Newt Gingrich. She calls the speaker of the House “the best membership recruiter NOW ever had.” And referring to the vulgar term that Gingrich applied to Hillary Rodham Clinton, Ireland told an East Montpelier, Vt., audience on Saturday that it was an acronym for “being in total control, Honey.”

If she can phrase it as a question, behind Door No. 3…

Speaking of senses of humor, host Bill Maher offered this observation on his show “Politically Incorrect”: “Bob Barker may countersue Dian Parkinson (who dropped her sexual discrimination suit against him), but he says he’ll drop the suit if she can guess how much he would have sued her for without going over the actual retail amount.”

In friendly Spokane, shouldn’t it be ‘Village of the Darned’?

John Carpenter, director of the remade version of “Village of the Damned,” experienced his first obsession with the 1960 film when he was just 12. “I somehow got this incredible crush on one of the girls in the original,” he says. “She was the first love object I had; I wanted her to zap me and take me over and make me do whatever she wanted.”

If that’s what people want, then why don’t more watch?

Jim Lehrer, co-host of Public Television’s “The MacNeil-Lehrer News Hour,” says there’s no other TV news show like his. “If you’re not interested in O.J. Simpson, we’re the only place you can go.”

And just when his singing career was going so well

Billy Ray Cyrus will make his acting debut opposite Fran Drescher on the sitcom “The Nanny.” “The fact that I’m a fan of the show, I was able to play myself,” Cyrus said. And that, he added, “helped me make the transition from singing to acting.”
