Jets Delay Flight

Compiled From Wire Services

A decision on the fate of the Winnipeg Jets was postponed following a request from the federal government for a meeting with the NHL.

The government in Ottawa sought a meeting today between senior cabinet members and NHL commissioner Gary Bettman to discuss the future of the league in Canada.

The Jets had set a deadline of midnight Monday for a decision on building a new arena. After that, Jets president Barry Shenkarow was to be free to sell the team.

John Loewen, chairman of a private consortium that is trying to buy the team, said his group is still concerned about whether it’s feasible to purchase the Jets and build an arena to keep the club in Winnipeg.
