Quilters Join Forces For Aids Patients
The Spokane AIDS Network will hold a community quilting bee Saturday to make lap quilts for people in the Inland Northwest with HIV or AIDS.
Quilters will gather at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Stake Center at 1620 E. 29th Ave. from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The Quilts of Compassion project was developed by the Spokane AIDS Network in recognition of its clients’ needs to take comfort in something, said Kevin Ketchie, the network’s volunteer coordinator and special programs coordinator. The quilts will serve as a reminder of care and support from the community, he said.
In its four-month existence, the program has already provided 15 to 20 quilts, Ketchie said.
Besides providing quilts, an event such as the quilting bee brings people together in a creative celebration and serves as an opportunity for community education and understanding about AIDS, Ketchie said.
“Without community involvement, we can’t educate to stop HIV and make people aware of AIDS happening right here.”
Ketchie hopes the quilting bee will involve new groups from the community in the efforts against HIV and AIDS.
The bee also offers an opportunity for people to reach out to those living with the virus without being frightened by the stigma that is often attached to HIV and AIDS, Ketchie said. People who may not be comfortable working hands-on with a client can still make a positive emotional impact.
People of all quilting skill levels are welcome at the bee, and experienced quilters will attend to provide assistance.
Participants may bring their quilts in any state of completion or come to work on other quilts. Some sewing machines and basting frames will be available.
In keeping with quilting bee tradition, a potluck lunch will be served. Participants are asked to bring a dish to share and their own utensils and plates. Herbal teas and apple cider will be provided.
In accordance with Mormon Church beliefs, no coffee, black tea or smoking will be allowed at the site.
