Gsl Golf Season Wraps Up

Dave Trimmer Staff Writer

They’ve made the turn in the high school golf season.

The Greater Spokane League season comes to an end today, the boys and girls have state qualifying rounds next week and the season concludes with state tournaments in Spokane on May 22 and 23.

On Monday, the Mead boys clipped defending champion University by 16 strokes to win the league title after the Titans had gone through the first half of the season undefeated. Before U-Hi’s win last season, Mead won the previous seven titles.

The third-place Mead girls also hold the key to other race, facing Gonzaga Prep today at Wandemere. Prep and Ferris split this year and are tied for the lead. The Bullpups won the previous three titles and tied with Mead before that. Ferris has not won a girls golf title in 11 years.

State qualifying starts with the girls playing 18 holes at Hangman Valley on Friday. The top 24 move on to Liberty Lake next Wednesday with the top 10 making the state tournament.

The Inland Empire boys tournament at Indian Canyon on Monday is a qualifying round. About two dozen teams from Eastern Washington and North Idaho will participate but the top 24 GSL golfers advance to the second round at MeadowWood on Thursday. The top nine boys from the two rounds qualify for state.

The boys state tournament is at The Creek at Qualchan while the girls are at Downriver. This is the first year the 36 holes for boys have been split over two days and the first time the girls have had two rounds.

Down to the wire

The GSL baseball race will most likely be determined Tuesday, the final day of games. But if play holds to form as it has all season, a seasonending playoff may be necessary to determine the league champ.

Key games begin today with Shadle Park at University and Rogers at Gonzaga Prep. Friday, Prep travels to Shadle and U-Hi plays at Rogers.

Tuesday, the Pirates travel to Ferris and Central Valley is on the road to face the Bullpups.

In softball, Mead holds the inside track while Rogers and U-Hi are in a fight for second place. Those two teams play each other at Rogers on Friday.

Loose on the Palouse

The Garfield-Palouse Vikings slowpitch softball team (11-0) is batting .538, averaging 20 runs an outing and has an on-base percentage of more than .800.

Shawtna Wroe has been on base 85 percent of the time, while Nikkie Brown and Michelle Kennedy are also better than 80 percent.

Cleveland strikes out

Attitude problems, bad grades and

a lack of interest have forced Cleveland High of the Metro League to forfeit the rest of its baseball games this season.

Then two players were suspended indefinitely for disciplinary reasons, leaving the team with 10 players. Last week, two players were declared ineligible when their grade-point averages dipped below the required 2.0.With four games left to play,

Cleveland had a record of 1-9 with eight players left after two were suspended for disciplinary reasons and two more were declared academically ineligible.

More the merrier

More players than ever get a chance to participate in football allstar games with the addition of one game and the continuation of another.

The state coaches association has added a game for Class A and B players, scheduled for Yakima on June 24. The B-8, which was in Wenatchee the last two years, is moving to Odessa.

The other game, which used to include just an occasional Class A or B player, is now for Class AAA and AA players and is in Spokane. That game is June 30 at Albi Stadium. The B-8 game is the same night at 7:30 in Odessa.

Eight players from this area have been invited to participate in the A-B game. Included on the roster are linemen Wayne Kitt of Springdale, Shane Airey of Riverside, Justin Heaton of Colfax and Pat Andersen of Almira/Coulee-Hartline; quarterback Nick Harkness of Reardan; running backs Travis Hille of Ritzville and Zach Boyk of Davenport; and tight end Dan Croxall of Medical Lake.

The rosters for the AAA-AA game were released last month. The B-8 rosters will be announced soon.
