A Simple Swing For Simple Pleasures

Don And Dave Runyan U-Bild Features

Lazy days and warm evenings are ideal for enjoying one of life’s simplest pleasures: swinging. Swinging, like rocking, is a therapeutic motion that relaxes the body and eases the mind. With a little work, do-it-yourselfers of all skill levels can experience a little “therapy” for themselves.

This easy-to-build hanging swing measures 40 inches long by 24 inches high by 24 inches deep. It can be hung from the ceiling of a porch, patio or carport or from a tree or homemade frame. The seat is suspended on a standard chain and can be raised, lowered or tilted back as desired.

All of the swing’s pieces are traceable except the slats, which are straight cuts of 1 x 2 pine lumber, so the pieces are simple to size. Just trace the curved parts onto exterior-grade fir plywood and saw them out. Then saw the 20 slat pieces. Drill where shown and assemble using carriage bolts, machine screws and nails.

The Hanging Swing plan, No. 288, is $6.50 and includes full-size traceable patterns, step-by-step directions with photos and a shopping list and cutting schedule.

A plan for a hanging love seat, No. 780, is also $6.50. It includes country-style touches like heartshaped cut-outs. In addition, a catalog picturing hundreds of other do-it-yourself projects is available for $3.95. Prices include sales tax, postage and handling.
