University On Brink Of Gsl Baseball Title

U-Hi is 10-4 followed by Central Valley (10-5), Shadle Park (10-5), Ferris (9-5), Rogers (8-6), Gonzaga Prep (8-6), Mead (5-9), North Central (3-11) and Lewis and Clark (1-13).

At University, the Titans beat Shadle Park for the second time this season. A seven-run fourth inning in the game broke it open for the Titans.

U-Hi pitcher Andy Furlott pitched a complete game as he scattered seven hits and struck out seven .

Brandon Svelmoe had five RBIs for the Titans, three off a three-run homer in the fifth.

Shadle can only hope University loses its final two games in order for it to have a chance at the GSL crown.

At Gonzaga Prep, the Bullpups got the game-winning run in the bottom of the seventh with the bases loaded and two outs when Rogers Jeff Olsen pitch hit Steve Steigleder to drive in Bob Strahl.

At CV, the Bears turned four double plays while Brady Nelson drove in three runs in a game Central Valley led from start to finish.

At North Central, the Indians walked three Ferris batters before Bryan Cosby had a two-run double which led to a sixrun first for the Saxons.

Softball

In the one Frontier League game, West Valley beat East Valley 7-5 before EV rebounded to beat WV 4-1 to hand the Eagles their first league loss of the season.

WV is 11-1 and EV is 9-3. Both teams have three games left.

The Knights blew the first game as they committed four errors in the top of the seventh. WV went on to score six runs in the inning.

West Valley’s Rachel Shawen hit a two-run double to give the Eagles the lead for good.

In the bottom of the seventh, EV scored two runs, but with two outs, Tricia Stookey was thrown out at the plate with two other base runners in scoring position.

The Knights rebounded for the second game as pitcher Kim Stern scattered seven hits and walked just one.

In GSL action, Central Valley sophomore pitcher Tori Mills threw her first career no-hitter as the Bears beat visiting Lewis and Clark 10-0.

In moving her record to 7-5, Mills struck out four and walked one.

CV is 8-7, LC is 1-13.

At Gonzaga Prep, Rogers put a 10-1 hurt on the Bullpups (5-9) as the Pirates’ Gena Greenside went 3 for 4 with four RBIs, Charlotte Perry was 2 for 4 with a double and a home run and Shannon Zahrowski drove in two runs with an RBI triple in the third inning.

Rogers is 11-3.

At University, the Titans were unfriendly hosts as they beat Shadle Park 16-0 in a five-inning affair.

U-Hi (11-3) pitcher Jamie Fox threw a one-hitter (her first), struck out seven and walked one in the win against the Highlanders (4-11).

The Titans’ Devon Bakken was 2 for 3 with two RBIs and Toshua Ballou was 2 for 4 with two RBIs.

And at North Central, the Indian beat Ferris in a well-pitched game by NC’s Denise Devereaux and Ferris’ Kylee Curry.

Devereaux struck out six and walked one while Curry struck out five and walked two, and each pitcher gave up just three hits.

In the second inning, NC’s Angie Corigliano tripled before Michele Taylor drove her in.

NC is 9-5 and Ferris is 2-12.

University took the inside track toward the Greater Spokane League baseball regular season championship as it defeated Shadle Park 18-4. It was the worst loss of the season for the Highlanders. If U-Hi wins today at Rogers and at North Central on Tuesday, the Titans will win the crown. In other GSL games, Gonzaga Prep handed visiting Rogers a 5-4 defeat, host Central Valley beat Lewis and Clark 12-4 and Ferris beat host North Central 10-7.
