Army Corps Dedicates New Headquarters
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers dedicated its new $19 million district headquarters Friday, 10 years after planning began.
Corps managers and local officials spoke during the dedication ceremony at the three-story brick building.
The building houses 396 workers in 93,800 square feet of space and serves as headquarters for the agency’s Walla Walla District, which operates hydroelectric dams, floodcontrol systems and other civil works projects.
The district is moving from a complex of buildings at the Walla Walla Airport that originally was used to house an Army Air Corps hospital.
Planning for new headquarters began after a 1984 inspection indicated the complex failed to meet federal building standards and fire safety codes. Inspectors also said maintenance and heating costs were excessive.
