Phils Sideline Ailing Stocker

Philadelphia shortstop Kevin Stocker, a former standout at Spokane’s Central Valley High School, left Friday night’s game against Atlanta with a mild groin strain and is listed as day-to-day.

Mariano Duncan started Saturday night in his place.

Clearing the bases

St. Louis shortstop Ozzie Smith left Saturday’s game against Houston after the sixth inning because of a bruised left thigh… . Los Angeles rookie reliever Antonio Osuna has allowed five home runs in his first 9 1/3 innings in the big leagues. Osuna worked 52 innings last year at Triple-A Albuquerque and Double-A San Antonio without allowing a home run.

Reds 13, Mets 11

Cincinnati

Cincinnati, in desperate need of a victory and resorting to desperate measures, rallied for nine runs in the last two innings to beat New York.

The Reds held a team meeting Friday night after opening the season 1-8, one of the worst starts in franchise history. Before Saturday’s game, owner Marge Schott rubbed dog hair from the team’s dead mascot on her players and coaches for good luck.

Phillies 3, Braves 1

Atlanta

Michael Mimbs limited Atlanta to one hit in six shutout innings and won his official major-league debut, leading Philadelphia past Atlanta.

The Phillies won their third straight game, and Charlie Hayes homered for the second night in a row against the Braves.

Dodgers 17, Rockies 11

Denver

Mike Piazza hit his first homer of the season, scored four runs and drove in three as Los Angeles held on to beat Colorado.

The Rockies, trailing 14-4 after five innings, rallied on John Vander Wal’s three-run, pinchhomer in the sixth and three more homers in the seventh by Dante Bichette, Roberto Mejia and pinch hitter Mike Kingery to make it 14-11.

Marlins 10, Expos 3

Montreal

Greg Colbrunn had four hits and drove in a careerhigh five runs, leading Florida to a rout of Montreal in a game delayed 39 minutes by an electrical problem that shut down the Olympic Stadium lights.

Colbrunn hit a two-run double to highlight a fiverun fourth inning, a runscoring double in the sixth and a two-run single in the seventh.

Cubs 13, Pirates 5

Pittsburgh

Shawon Dunston drove in three runs with a pair of doubles and Jaime Navarro had a career-high eight strikeouts as Chicago beat Pittsburgh.

Rey Sanchez, Rick Wilkins and Jose Hernandez had two RBIs apiece as the Cubs won their fourth consecutive road game for the first time since 1975.

Cardinals 7, Astros 5

St. Louis

Former Seattle Mariner Darnell Coles hit a threerun homer and Bernard Gilkey also homered as St. Louis beat Houston and stopped the Astros’ fivegame winning streak.

The Cardinals gave starter Ken Hill a 6-0 lead in the third inning, but he couldn’t get past the fifth after a three-run homer by Phil Plantier and a solo shot by Scooter Tucker.

Giants 13, Padres 6

San Diego

Jeff Reed’s four hits and two RBIs featured a season-high 18-hit attack as San Francisco beat San Diego to hand the Padres their sixth straight loss.

The Giants, winning their third straight, came up with a six-run fourth to overcome a 5-2 deficit.
