Man Pleads Innocent To Rigging Gas Bomb

Compiled From Wire Services

A former Idaho Falls restaurant owner accused of rigging a gasoline bomb to destroy his business faces an Aug. 22 trial.

Charles Schroeder has pleaded innocent to building a device containing about 60 gallons of gasoline which could have destroyed a city block.

Employees in a nearby hair salon alerted police of a strong gas smell. The bomb was defused before it could destroy Charlie’s restaurant, which is now under new ownership as Mona Lisa’s.

Schroeder turned himself in to police on March 22, a day after the device was discovered. Officers said he confessed to building it to cover tax and other business debts, but Schroeder claimed it was not set to explode.

He is free on a $75,000 bond.
