Esther Muhs Harrison Flats, Idaho

Memorial service for Esther C. Muhs, 86, will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Harrison Community Baptist Church. Yates-Hodge Funeral Home in St. Maries is in charge of arrangements.

Born in Summitt, Idaho, Mrs. Muhs died Monday at home.

She graduated from high school in Modesto, Calif., and received a teaching certificate from Cheney Normal School.

She taught school in Spokane and Sandpoint.

She and her husband, Ted Muhs, moved to Harrison Flats from Spokane in 1945. She retired in 1970. Her husband died in 1981.

Mrs. Muhs enjoyed sewing, baking bread and knitting and was an avid reader.

She was a member of the Harrison Community Baptist Church, Harrison Senior Citizens and the Idaho Association of Retired Teachers.

Survivors include one son, Fred Muhs of Harrison Flats; two daughters, Janice Thompson of Thompson Lake, Idaho, and Roberta Arnzen of Harrison Flats; one sister, Lois Walraven of Santa Rosa, Calif.; eight grandchildren and three greatgrandchildren.

Margaret “Elaine” Young Spokane

Memorial service for Margaret “Elaine” Young, 64, will be held at 7 p.m. Monday at Millwood Community Presbyterian Church. Private burial will be at Pines Cemetery.

Mrs. Young, who died Wednesday, was born in Grenora, N.D. She had lived in Spokane for 60 years and graduated from West Valley High School.

She worked for the East Valley School District for 25 years and retired in 1992.

She was a member and deacon of Millwood Community Presbyterian Church. She served on the Millwood Planning Commission and had been a member of the Millwood Town Council since 1986.

Her husband Norman Young, died in 1994. She is survived by one son, John Young of Spokane; seven daughters, Susan Holcomb, Sandra Lindley, Leslie Brown, LeAnne Lallier, Lori Stewart and Shelly Young, all of Spokane, and Sharon Wieber of Lynnwood, Wash.; her mother, Helen Legge of Spokane; four sisters, Lois Batson of Millwood, June Hathaway of Otis Orchards, and Ina Grunwald and Carol Schjodt, both of Spokane; one brother, Glenn Legge of Redding, Calif.; 16 grandchildren, two stepgrandchildren and four stepgreatgrandchildren.

Melvin Slinkard Spokane

Service for Melvin L. Slinkard, 81, is set for 1 p.m. Monday at Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home with burial at Riverside Memorial Park.

Mr. Slinkard, a longtime Spokane resident, died Tuesday. He was born in Tekoa, Wash.

During World War II he worked for Boeing building airplanes. He was a warehouseman at the Spokane Flour Mill from 1953 until 1974.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Beulah Slinkard; one son, Lester Slinkard; one daughter, Della Warner; one sister, Ruth Jenicek; 10 grandchildren and numerous greatgrandchildren.

Lucile Timm Spokane

Services for Lucile I. Timm, 75, is set for 11 a.m. Saturday at Strate Funeral Home in Davenport, Wash. Burial will be at Hillcrest Cemetery in Harrington, Wash.

Born in Odessa, Wash., Mrs. Timm died Tuesday. She graduated from high school in Harrington and attended beauty school in Spokane.

She worked as a grocery clerk in Harrington, where she lived with her husband, Fredrick Timm. They traveled to several area schools with her husband’s teaching and coaching job before settling in Moses Lake in 1949. In Moses Lake they operated a grocery store and retired in 1976.

Her husband died in 1977 and she returned to Spokane in 1978. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star.

She is survived by one daughter, Penny Strange of Federal Way, Wash.; one son, Rockne Timm of Spokane; two sisters, Elvine Batchelor of Spokane and Maryann Williams of Vancouver, Wash.; two brothers, Jack Heimbigner of Spokane and Vern Heimbigner of Ogden, Utah.; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association.

Isaac ‘Darby’ Neddo III Spokane

Service for Isaac James “Darby” Neddo III, 87, is planned for 11 a.m. Saturday at the Malta (Idaho) Ward Chapel of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Burial will be at Valley Vu Cemetery in Malta. Thornhill Valley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Neddo, who died Tuesday, was born in Malta. He had lived in Spokane for 13 years and was a real estate agent for Hege and Co. He also had managed apartments for Goodale and Barbieri. He retired in 1980.

He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Eunice Neddo, in 1983 and his second wife, Hannah Neddo, in 1994. He is survived by four daughters, Wilma Teeter and Shirma Anne “Sue” Harms, both of Spokane, Melba “Nin” Van Wey of Chula Vista, Calif., and Saundra McCombs of Henderson, Nev.; nine sons, Delbert Neddo of Ridgefield, Wash., Carl, Virgil and Richard Neddo, all of Kuna, Idaho, William Neddo of Weiser, Idaho, Ether, Thomas and Griffin Neddo, all of Spokane, and Steven Neddo of Brush Prairie, Wash.; two brothers, Milton Neddo of Grand Coulee and Alvin Neddo of Malta; three sisters, Estella Hall and Naomi Paskett, both of Malta, and Hope John of Blackfoot, Idaho; 41 grandchildren, 57 greatgrandchildren and one great-greatgrandson.

Kathy Petton Post Falls

No service will be held for Kathy N. Petton, 75, at her request. English Funeral Chapel in Post Falls is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Petton, who died Tuesday, was born in Dallas.

She moved to Post Falls from San Diego in 1991.

Mrs. Petton had worked as a chef for American Airlines for 24 years and retired in 1972.

Her husband Floyd died in 1990.

She is survived by two daughters, Dolly Thomas of Marana, Ariz., and Wathena Stuart of Post Falls; six grandchildren and 11 greatgrandchildren.

Deuward “Shorty” Lawrence Spokane

Service for Deuward H. “Shorty” Lawrence, 86, is planned for 3 p.m. today at St. Peter Lutheran Church, where he was a member. Burial will be at Spokane Memorial Gardens.

Mr. Lawrence, who died Tuesday, was born in Bruce, Wis. He moved to Kellogg in 1941 to work at the Sunshine Mine and moved to Spokane in 1945.

He worked as a carpenter for 25 years and was a member of the Independent Order of Foresters.

His wife, Pearl Lawrence, preceded him in death. Survivors include two daughters, Della Ruddy and Norma Jones of Pullman; one brother, Marion Lawrence, and one sister, Vivian Sorenson, both of Wisconsin; 12 grandchildren and 18 greatgrandchildren.

Duane Kinder Spokane

Service for Duane W. Kinder, 73, will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-South. Cremation will follow.

Born in Twin Falls, Idaho, Mr. Kinder died Saturday.

He served in the Army during World War II and worked at Safeway Stores for 43 years.

He had lived in Spokane for 55 years.

His wife, Margaret, died in 1989. He is survived by two sons, Karl Kinder of Richmond, Ind., and Alan “Kurly” Kinder of Spokane; two daughters, Karyn Christiansen of Bangor, Pa., and Cecilia Bostwick of Bradford, Mass.; two brothers, Noel Kinder of Tempe, Ariz., and Craig Kinder of Coarsegold, Calif.; and seven grandchildren.

Teddy Goetjen Worley, Idaho

Memorial service for Teddy Gordon Goetjen, 63, will be held at a later date in Maryland. English Funeral Chapel in Coeur d’Alene is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Goetjen, who died Monday at home, was born in Portland.

He had worked as an engineer for a construction company in Washington, D.C., and retired five years ago. He moved to Coeur d’Alene in December, from Maryland.

He and his wife had planned to travel the United States by car.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Goetjen of Edgewater, Md.; one son, Fred Goetjen of Worley; one daughter, Tamara Garness of Spokane; one granddaughter and two greatgrandchildren.

Clifford ‘C.P.’ Lamb Coeur d’Alene

Service for Clifford “C.P.” Lamb, 89, is set for 9:30 a.m. Monday at Yates Funeral Home in Coeur d’Alene with burial to follow at Greenwood Memorial Terrace in Spokane.

Mr. Lamb died May 3 at Kootenai Medical Center.

He was born in Mount Forrest, Mich.

He and his wife, Ruby Lamb, lived in Santa Ana, Calif. He retired from the Kirby Co., and moved to Coeur d’Alene in 1965.

He was a fisherman and enjoyed golfing and bowling.

Survivors include his wife of 66 years, Ruby; one son, Alfred “Bud” Lamb of Hayden Lake, Idaho; two daughters, Carolyn Kreager and Marilyn Cooper, both of Coeur d’Alene; three halfbrothers; one half-sister; six grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter.

Memorial contributions may be made to Children’s Village or the Shriners Hospital for Crippled Children.

Sidney Chaffee Harrison, Idaho

Memorial service for Sidney B. Chaffee, 81, will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at N-Sid-Sen Camp and Conference Center on Lake Coeur d’Alene.

Shoshone Funeral Service in Kellogg is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Sidney died Wednesday at home.

He was born in Lafayette, Ind., and moved to Idaho in 1946 and was the owner and operator of the Pik Kwik Grocery in Kellogg.

He was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Kiwanis, the Kellogg Masons and the Shriners.

He loved to travel and enjoyed his lake home.

His wife, Louise, preceded him in death.

He is survived by four daughters, Lois Chaffee of New York City, Molli Chaffee of Wallace, Mary Liz Chaffee of Seattle and Lillis Chaffee of Tacoma; one brother, Chester Chaffee of Pearl City, Hawaii; four sisters, Alma Roberts of Seattle, Sarah Snyder of Beaverton, Ore., Ruth Munson of Lynnwood, Wash., and Ruby Haugan of Spokane; and one grandson.

Donna Shaffer Hayden Lake, Idaho

Service for Donna Lee Shaffer, 69, will be at 1 p.m. today at Yates Funeral Home in Hayden Lake. Burial will follow at Coeur d’Alene Memorial Cemetery.

Mrs. Shaffer, who was born in Deadwood, S.D., died Tuesday.

She lived in Mullan, Idaho, prior to living in Hayden Lake.

She graduated from Coeur d’Alene High School.

She and her second husband, Mitch Tobler, owned Tobler Marina on Hayden Lake.

He died in 1968 and she continued to operate the marina until it was sold in 1984.

She was active in bowing, baseball, basketball, dancing and tennis.

Survivors include her husband, Jim Shaffer; one son, David Tobler of Spokane; three daughters, Vicki Jenkins of Hauser Lake, Idaho, Janis Vinson of Boise and Terri Baxter of Coeur d’Alene; eight stepchildren; seven grandchildren and one greatgrandchild.
